Many features factor into the purchase of a floor scale such as:

  • Capacity: You will need to determine the maximum amount of capacity that you require
  • Size & Shape: Platform scale are available in a multitude of different sizes and capacities with a 4′ x 4′ 5000lb warehouse scale being the most common.
  • Legal for Trade: If you are buying or selling from your scale then you will need a legal for trade or NTEP approved scale. Many lower cost floor scales are not NTEP certified , so verifying the type of scale in necessary
  • Digital Indicator: Digital weight indicators can be made of plastic or stainless steel. When using a scale where dust, water or humidity changes are present a stainless steel NEMA IV indicator and scale may be more suitable.
  • Construction: Floor scales are either constructed from mild steel or stainless steel. In most cases, the mild steel scale would be adequate. Once again, where dust, water or humidity changes are present the stainless steel construction is recommended. Stainless steel scales are almost universally used in food, chemical and pharmaceutical applications as well to minimize the risk of bacteria.

There are many types of floor scales as well such as:

  • Floor Scales: This term is most widely used to describe a general weighing scale such as one used to weigh a pallet of goods. Floor scales can also be known as pallet scales, warehouse scales, platform scales and legal for trade scales.
  • Portable Scales: Include scales that can be pushed around including mechanical beam scales, portable electronic scales. and drum /barrel weighers. Typically, portable scales are approximately 5 inches from the floor whereas barrel or drum scale are only 1.5 inches from the ground. Although more expensive, the weighing process is more functional and safer.
  • Pallet Jack Scales: These are usually standard pallet jacks that a scale manufacturer has built load cells and instrumentation into the pallet jack.
  • Lift Truck Scales: These are usually load frame assemblies that are designed to be installed onto your existing lift truck. Today’s models include legal for trade and wireless versions.
